The Dowry Workshop has hitherto specialised in church furnishings, ecclesiastical goods, and finely produced printed works. We are now extending that same concern for traditional materials, proper proportions, and careful workmanship to a new range of domestic objects for the discerning.

The first of these is our Bespoke Dressing Gown, cut to generous and traditional proportions and made from the beautiful silks, damasks, and brocades more commonly associated with ecclesiastical vesture.

Each gown may be made to the customer’s required chest size and finished length. A selection of fabrics is available, ranging from restrained self-coloured damasks to richly figured vestment silks.

Shown here are examples made from remnant fabrics in our workshop: the first in a gold and ivory silk damask, and the second a floral silk brocade. The gold/ivory gown is unlined, giving it a lighter weight suitable for use throughout much of the year. The floral gown is warmly lined in flannel and finished with quilted cotton-sateen collar and cuffs, creating a more substantial garment for the colder months.

Also illustrated are unlined examples in red damask, ivory damask, and examples in both a green and a white-and-gold vestment fabric traditionally known as St Margaret.

Prices begin at £200 for an unlined gown in a cost effective fabric, with the final cost depending upon the chosen fabric, dimensions, lining, quilting, and other details.

The possibilities are extensive: from a relatively simple summer dressing gown to a fully lined and quilted garment of considerable splendour.

Customers wishing to place an order should make a deposit of £150 via this page, after which we should be very pleased to discuss individual requirements and can provide our specification sheet setting out the principal choices available when commissioning a bespoke dressing gown.

Once your specifications have been confirmed, the lead time for production is 4 weeks.

N.b. The first two gowns illustrated are completed physical prototypes. The additional fabrics and colourways are created using digital image software, and are intended to give an idea of the possibilities available.
